Daria Noferini: Physical Chemistry seminar.

Title: Following hydrogen dynamics in hydrogels. How neutron spectroscopy can help in preserving precious artefacts and designing new drug delivery systems.

Abstract: Neutron spectroscopy is a powerful and versatile experimental method to probe atomic and molecular dynamics in the sub-ps - μs timescale. It can be applied to a variety of different materials for several applications and is complementary to many other techniques both in terms of probed dynamical window and element sensitivity. In this seminar, after a brief summary/introduction on neutron spectroscopy and the new possibilities at the ESS, I will present an example from the world of colloids: polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (pHEMA) hydrogels. Hydrogels with optimal release and confining properties for drugs and detergents, such as HEMA based systems, are highly relevant for medical and cultural heritage applications. To optimize their delivery properties, an intimate comprehension of transport phenomena at molecular level is highly desirable. To this aim, we used neutron spectroscopy (more specifically, quasielastic neutron scattering) to selectively investigate the dynamics of the polymer network and the transport properties of the water confined into the hydrogel matrix. In particular, the focus here is on the effect of the crosslinking nature (chemical or physical) and water content.
