A Physical Chemistry seminar by Dr Georg Meisl, Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge

Title: Determining the mechanisms and rates of protein aggregation in living systems

Abstract: The quantification of the rates and mechanisms of protein self-assembly, in particular when it takes place in living systems, is a major challenge in biophysics. In my work, I develop mathematical models and analysis frameworks to quantify the key processes in disease-related protein aggregation. This strategy has been very successful in the analysis of controlled in vitro reactions; the crucial next step is to enable its application in living systems, in order to obtain mechanistic insights directly in the diseased organism. I will give an overview of our in vitro work and then showcase how we have begun to extend this strategy to a number of in vivo systems, including patient data to determine the rates of tau seed formation in Alzheimer’s disease.
